Mountain Retreat Association prospectus and letter, 1898.

The collection consists of three items: the prospectus, accompanying letter, and the envelope in which they were delivered to Mr. W.W. Finlay of the Southern Railway Company. The Mountain Retreat Association prospectus, titled "A Mountain Retreat. Health and Rest, Home in the 'Land of the Sky,'" outlines a plan for a Christian community (now known as Montreat) near Black Mountain, N.C.

The Mountain Retreat Association was established by Reverend John C. Collins of New Haven, Connecticut, in 1897. The name of the Association was shortened to Montreat during Collins' lifetime.
